How To Have World Class Posture
Here is how to have world-class posture, at any age or skill level. I will give you my experience in practicing this crucial element for any dancer.
EXCERPT FROM VIDEO:
"Now if we think about it like this, posture for us as dancers is critical. And you might say, "Yeah, that's obvious, I know that. I've heard about it," but you may not have a system that you use to ensure that you create good posture every single time. The reason I say that is because I've done a lot of research, and systems aren't really taught in dancing. You know you should have good posture, but you don't know how to create it, and this is the big missing gap.
I encourage you to explore these ideas and chat about them with your coach. I'm sure the coach or the instructor of the classes you go to have their own way of doing things. I'm just going to share what really worked for me because there are many different ways to develop good posture. I hope that these ideas really enlighten you. They will give you a formula you can use every time, and you will become really excited because, with the good posture that you're about to create, you will notice a difference in everything you do.
Now what we have to understand, first of all, is that all of your problems are going to stem from not having good posture in place. You could argue the point and say, "Well, my footwork's bad," or "My technique's bad," or this or that. However, the point is you will not be able to dance your technique, you won't be able to dance your footwork effectively, and you certainly won't be able to execute good choreography, basic choreography, or high-level choreography without excellent posture. It's a non-negotiable. It just cannot happen. It does not matter how much you work on those other factors; without good balance and posture, it’s not going to work.
Now, the reason for this is because we are always fighting gravity. Gravity is trying to pull you to the centre of the earth. As dancers, our job is to resist gravity. Our spine has to move through time and space whilst we dance our feet through the floor. So we actually have this opposing force always going on through the body; because of this, we need to make sure that we have a system in place so our posture can remain aligned through all our movements. This is for social dancers and also competitors, not just for high-grade dancing.
Now most problems in dancing, as I said before, can be traced back to bad posture. Your balance, control, look, feel, timing, technique, choreography, and spins: all of these can come back to something to do with a postural problem. Now, that's not always the case; I will caution you that there are always other factors in play. Of course, we can't be too single-minded; however, it's a basic known fact amongst a lot of coaches that you can look back to this as the beginning.
So I hope I've drilled that in enough to make you aware that posture is non-negotiable. It's not something you're just going to get; it's a constant work in progress. It's something you have to be aware of every single minute of the day because it's not just when you're in the dance studio; it's the 18 or 20 or 22 hours outside of the dance studio that your posture's really taking place. It ultimately shows up in the studio.
The six basic causes of what bad posture is are ones that you can maybe identify with; we all will be able to identify with at least one of these. Let's have a look at the first six basic bad postures, and please remember there is definitely more than one way to create bad posture in your body, but we'll just talk about these."
